For Sri Lankans, Aluth Avurudu, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, is more than a date. It is a time to renew, give thanks, and come together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Is Avurudu Celebrated Only in Sri Lanka?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes and no. Aluth Avurudu is a proud part of Sri Lankan culture; however, its roots come from old astrological and farming traditions. The festival marks the sun\u2019s move from Meena (Pisces) to Mesha (Aries), which signals the end of the harvest and the start of spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Origins of Aluth Avurudu<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In earlier times, people called the New Year \u201cAluth Sahal Mangalle,\u201d the New Rice Harvest Ceremony. Communities thanked the gods for a good harvest and prayed for prosperity in the next season. Over time, the festival changed and grew. Sinhala and Tamil customs blended, and the event became Aluth Avurudu\u2014a bright, shared celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>It\u2019s All About Timing &amp; the Stars!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri Lankans follow <strong>nekath<\/strong>\u2014auspicious times set by astrologers. As a result, each ritual happens at an exact moment. For example, cooking the first meal and starting work take place at the noted time.
