May Day – A Slight Change of Events

All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance, and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence. Paying our respects to the workers worldwide May 1st they have brought the balance among the international  working communities. Many of the rising countries still follow what the previous workers have accomplished and sort, protect, continue and improve for a healthier future working experience.

They have what achieved : 

  • The labor movement
  • The 8-hour work day
  • The end to child labor
  • Weekends off work
  • Workers comp
  • Health and Safety standards
  • Collective bargaining.

President Maithripala Sirisena declared May 7 as the May Day and announced May 7 as a public and mercantile holiday, President’s Media Division said. The President made this announcement during a meeting held with the Heads of Media institutions at the President’s house on the 6th of April. The President earlier said that on a request from the Maha Sangha the May Day rallies and labor day celebrations will be held on the 7th of May this year instead of May 1st due to the Vesak Festival.

The Vesak full moon is commemorated on 29th and 30th of April and the Vesak Week will continue till May 3rd. The President has advised not to have political rallies and processions on May 1st because of the Vesak celebrations.

We may not commemorate for the workers here today but it certainly is worth paying your respects to the other  contributing workers around the world and you yourself could also be hard-working citizen to whom we wish a very Happy May Day!
