Apple unveiled its latest iPhone devices, the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro on the 14th of September, 2021. As usual, the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro received much praise. Apple has always wowed its customers with breakthrough technology and stunning designs, and this year was no exception. The unmistakable similarities between last year’s iPhone 12 Pro and this year’s 13 Pro make us question though, is 13 Pro really worth the hype?
iPhone 13 Pro comes in two sizes, the 13 Pro, and 13 Pro max. This year, Apple introduced the all-new Sierra blue, a soothing light blue that looks quite elegant and classy. Silver, gold, and graphite are the other 3 colors available. The capacity options now have a whopping 1 terabyte option, which can be quite handy for those who want to unleash the full potential of the iPhone 13 pro.
What’s new in iPhone 13 Pro?
iPhone 13 Pro looks mostly similar to the iPhone 12 Pro from last year in appearance. However, if you look closely, there are many improvements to the design and technology. The notch is a little smaller now. The phone is a bit thicker in size, and the camera bump is bigger. Your old cases from iPhone 12 Pro might not fit.
The 120Hz display is a real treat to the eye, and with ProMotion, Apple automatically applies the best display quality for the job. It now has 12 different refresh rates on the OLED, LTPO display.
The battery life is definitely better! Apple claims the 13 Pro has 90 minutes more battery life than the 12 Pro, and 2.5 hours more on the 13 Pro max. Many users said they experienced great battery life and went to bed with more than 20% left, even after using the phone for 4K videos and tethering all day! This looks like one of the best improvements we had so far.
The all-new A15 Bionic chip has 5 GPU cores, which makes it even faster. It also facilitates more camera features with its impressive performance. The camera systems of both iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro max are identical. The wide-angle is still the same as 12 Pro, but got a bigger sensor size and pixel size. We can see more light, and better picture quality!
The low light pictures are also much better and improved, with less image noise and more dynamic range. The variation between the colors are very accurate as well. Images are sharper and more detailed, kudos iPhone 13 Pro!
What are the tie-breakers?
The 13 Pro and 13 Pro max now use semantic recognition in your picture profiles. This can make a considerable improvement in your picture quality and how it looks. For example, it can now identify your skin and make your skin tone look more elegant than it used to. This feature immediately gives users the access to take photos as they do on a Samsung or a Google Pixel. Although, it could be a bit complicated to use.
Macro photography lovers are now hyped about Apple finally bringing their game to the table. iPhone 13 Pro can now shoot close-ups of any object, with precise attention to detail. This feature was never before enabled on the previous line of iPhones.
The video portrait mode could be a real tie-breaker for short video creators and for on-the-go moments. This 1080p, 13fps, HDR video mode switches the focus from person to person or objects with a tap. Just like that.
ProRes video feature is yet to be released, but we cannot wait! It’s a high-quality video codec, 4K quality, and 30fps. This feature is however limited to the iPhone 13 Pro’s larger capacities, 256GB and up. If your plan is to shoot 4K ProRes, then you might want to go for a bigger capacity.
What should you really know?
Those who were waiting to see a USB type C, and fast charging (real fast charging) will still be disappointed. Wireless charging is still on the table, and MagSafe-enabled iPhone 13 Pro is still a pretty neat option. The 1TB storage option is also a big plus for those who want to store thousands of memories and high-resolution videos on the phone.
For those who use the iPhone for regular tasks like setting up the alarms, taking photos, making calls, and the basics, upgrading to 13 Pro might not be worth it. If you own a 12 Pro and you are not a huge enthusiast of the ProRes, ProMotion, and other new features, then you do not need to invest on this iPhone.
However, for those who are eager to try the best new features of Apple, and create stunning videos and short films, take macro photographs, then this iPhone is the one for you. In addition to that, if your iPhone 12 pro doesn’t last all day for you, the 13 Pro might be a better alternative.
