Guide to retail and shop vacancies in Sri Lanka

If you are interested in looking for jobs in Sri Lanka, you will be happy to know that there are plenty of shop jobs and retail vacancies currently available. These sales jobs are always in plentiful supply because of the amount of turnover. People are constantly quitting these jobs, so the vacant positions will always need to be filled. For the most part, these jobs require very little experience or education, so there is a good chance you can be hired not long after you submit your application. Jobs in Colombo and jobs in Kandy are equally plentiful at the moment. This is a good sign in this uncertain economy we have been facing the past several years. Let’s take a look at some of the various positions you can consider applying for as far as jobs in shops are concerned.

Sales associate


When it comes to jobs in retails, sales associate is the most common vacancy you will find. Because of this, it is the easiest job to get. The responsibilities will vary depending on the shop you are working at. Generally, your job will most likely consist of running the cash register, placing the items the customer has purchased in a bag or helping customers to find various items in the store. Because you are dealing with the public directly, you must always make sure that you look your best and you are smiling at all times. People interested in a sales associate position must have good interpersonal skills. You must be polite and attentive to the needs of the customers you are helping.

Customer service representative

In all retail shops, there is a customer service area where people will go to return or exchange items they purchased in the shop. There may also be people who want to make a complaint. Since many of the customers who visit the customer service desk are not in a very good mood, it is important for a customer service reprehensive to have a lot of patience. You must be able to listen to the customer’s concerns and do whatever you can to make sure they leave the store satisfied. There will be times when this is impossible, but you still need to try your best. This job may also require you to answer customer phone calls being made to the shop. The ability to take phone calls and deal with people at the shop is critical. There will probably be times when you are asked to do both at the same time if your shop is understaffed. Therefore, the ability to multitask is essential.

Manager

This is not an entry level position. It requires training and experience because you will be doing tasks such as hiring and firing employees, counting down cash registers, making the employee schedules and assigning jobs to the employees. There are two main ways that a person can become a manager. Many shops have manager training programs that you can apply for. The shop will teach you how to be a manager and you will be paid while you are learning. However, many of these training programs have waiting lists. Another way to get a manager job is if you already have experience managing a different shop. If you enough managerial experience and your references check out, you should not have any problem getting hired for a manager vacancy.

Maintenance associate

A maintenance associate is primarily responsible for the cleanliness and general upkeep of the shop. This job has a wide variety of responsibilities. In some instances, you may be required to have mechanical skills that will allow you to repair machinery that breaks down in the shop. In other cases, your job may consist of mainly mopping the floors and emptying trash cans on the inside and outside of the shop. If there is a spill in the middle of an aisle, the maintenance associate is the person they will call to clean it up. This is a job that is primarily applied for by men because it does require a fair amount of physical strength and lifting. This comes mainly from lifting heavy bags of trash into dumpsters or other refuse bins.

Storeroom associate

Storeroom associates are commonly found in large retail stores that sell large items. These people have jobs that consist of unloading trucks that deliver items to the shop. After the trucks have been completely unloaded, the items must be placed in their appropriate locations in the storeroom so they can be found quickly at a later date. Storeroom associates are also called upon to bring large items up to the front of the store when they are purchased by a customer. If the customer needs help placing the item in their vehicle, it is the responsibility of the storeroom associate to help them by making sure the item is secured in their vehicle. In some cases, the item may need to be tied to the roof of the customer’s vehicle. Once again, this is a job that requires a lot of lifting. Unloading trucks for many hours is very physically demanding and requires a person to be in good physical condition. For these reasons, the vast majority of storeroom associates are men.

Stock person

These are the people who are responsible for taking the items out of the storeroom and placing them on the shelves of the sales floor so customers can buy them. A stock person is also responsible for making the price labels that will be placed on the shelf under the item, telling the customer the price of the item. This will require the person to use scanning devices and small printers to create labels, locate items in the storeroom and keep track of the shop’s inventory. This is an entry level job. Many shops have their stock people work during the night so the aisles of the store are clean and fully stocked for customers during the day.
